ken's promotion

the pictures explain it all. for his promotion to lieutenant commander, ken had his pinning ceremony last week and i was able to do the honors after he took the oath with his captain. afterwards we had a get together at the club for the public works department, the seabees, and the officers on base where we had snacks, drinks, and a cake. one of his chiefs made sure he got a "wetting down"! it was a fantastic day!! congrats to my sweet hubs!! we will have another "wetting down" party at our house on april 12 so i'll be sure and post pictures.

happy easter - celebrate Jesus! + our easter 'blunder'

1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"
4But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. Mark 16:1-6

today we showed up to the sunrise beach service off base (hosted by our protestant base chapel) with echo, our beach chairs, and wearing casual clothes (read: track suit and no makeup.) when we arrived, we were shocked to see the concrete platform 10 meters above the beach, owned by a hotel, full of white plastic chairs, and sound/music/instruments all set up. to top it off, people were greeting us in ties and easter dresses. ties and easter dresses!! my heart starting beating rapidly. embarassment unconcealed by red cheeks began to take over. i thought, 'crap, why are they all dressed up!!' we didn't get the memo that the beach sunrise service was formal! after thinking about it, i was not surprised since our base chaplain's denomination is formal, but i thought a beach sunrise service would be cop-a-squat casual-style service, simple and pure. we've stumbled upon a few in our time and found a casual, welcoming, simple set-up.

we tried to hide in the back at the end of the aisle, and lucklily echo was good and didn't whine, beg, or draw attention to herself (us). despite how awkard i felt, it was good. it was good because i know God doesn't care how i show up. God doesn't care how anyone 'shows up' to meet with Him. for it is by HIS GRACE we are saved. nothing of ourselves. and nothing we do impresses Him. He died and rose for us. He LOVED (and still LOVES) us that much! and today, we celebrated that! track suit and all...

is it possible?

i had a thought the other day. what if i lost 30 lbs? what if i got in shape and ran the athens marathon? SCREECCHHH....whoa...where did i get that idea? i mean seriously, i tried to run the 2001 chicago marathon and blew out my knee in a 10k race months before. do i think i can really do it? well, i can only think of one way to anwer this question..."I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." (Phil 4:13)
now i've put it out there so you can ask me how i'm doing with my endeavor. btw, this was not a sudafed-induced thought because i came up with it before i got sick. i have friends who have run several marathons and i am amazed at this accomplishment. what better place to do it? (because the reality is that if i can do it, it will only be once. i don't love running!) so here goes, i'm setting my goals high...athens marathon nov 9, 2008.
this quote from a guy selling his services to train you cracks me up:
"Having worked with dozens of beginning runners who have "conquered" the Athens Marathon course, I can say that with the right pacing and strategy, the Athens Marathon will not seem difficult at all. "
mr. sir, i beg to differ, i think running 26.2 miles will be difficult; not impossible, but difficult!

olive oil tour

so i'm under the weather and not working for the second day in a row. i feel like my head and chest are going to explode, but slowly, i think the antibiotic the doc gave me is helping. and i finally did the nasal medicine correctly and it made all the difference in the world!

i realized i haven't been posting some things i really wanted to post. in january i arranged for a group of us to visit the biolea olive oil factory i highly recommend this stone-pressed organic olive oil. we learned all we wanted to know (and more) about pressing, what's really "organic", and how hard it is. btw, i can ship olive oil at USPS prices from the base. if you're interested, let me know. a case of 6 is 40 euro (about $60). williams sonoma used to sell 1 bottle of it for $30. SCANDAL! the owner gave us the tour and he is really nice. i shamelessly plug this stuff. :)

new look

like the new look? this a picture of my favorite beach, falasarna, it's about an hour from our house. isn't the water just breathtaking? makes you want come to visit, right? great, i hope you will!

R&R, surprise parties, and celebrating baby dancjzek soon to come!

the blog title says it all. our trip back to the states = 3 weeks of fun! my mom was really surprised as you can see below. we even surprised my sister with a cake at the party for her 30th. we also had a family bbq the next day. the last stop on our trip was raleigh to throw joni a baby shower. 8 of the girls were able to fly/drive in to "bring the shower to her" and we all had a fantastic time. ken and bill cooked for us all weekend and even managed to escape us for some guy time.

we were so glad to see everyone we did, but sad we couldn't make it around to see everyone. not going to texas during this trip felt like i didn't really go home, but as far as my immediate family goes, no one lives there anymore :(

here are some photos from our vacation. you can check out all of them on the picasa link or just see a few below.
