doug...ENGAGED!!!

right after he did it!!out celebrating afterwards

my little brother got ENGAGED!! and he picked a great day to do it ... the 16th! :) he drove up to wyoming where candice is in school to be a dental hygienist. it was her last day of the semester before summer break and she was in clinic. her instructor said they had an overflow and asked if she could see another patient. candice was reluctant because she was very busy and asked if anyone else could do it. when her instructor said no, she went into the room and my brother was sitting there with a cap pulled way down to cover most of his face. he looked up at her and candice was completely shocked!! then doug got down on his knee and asked her to marry him!! she said yes, twice! apparently her mom was somewhere in sight and got the whole thing on video tape. candice will be in arkansas for 2 months and then she'll go back to school. she graduates in april 2008 and the wedding will be sometime in the fall of 2008. i'm looking forward to candice becoming my sister-in-law...she's a fantastic girl!!!

congratulations doug and candice!!! let the fun of wedding planning begin...(and by fun i mean any word that is exactly opposite of fun!)

how is it possible i'm 31??!??!?!?!?

well today is my birthday. 31!!! how the heck did i get this old?? now i'm no longer 30 -- i'm in my thirties!! :( yikes! thank you to everyone who called and sent an email wishing me a happy birthday. it meant so much to hear your voice! i almost forgot it was my birthday because we had my party on the 4th almost 2 weeks ago. my friend sarah asked me if i was going to go ahead and just change my actual b-day to the 4th and i'm thinking about it. it's my favorite holiday and the last few years i've celebrated my b-day sometime during the 4th celebration.

my sweet husband got me texas tech washers (and of course with it he added the texas longhorns washers), and a beautiful white gold and diamond cross. i tried to take a picture of it but it didn't turn out. you can kind of see it it the below picture. ken took me to the bat restaurant (not sure the name of it in greek but it has a bat logo) and it was YUMMY! easily my new favorite upscale restaurant here in crete.
also, we tried to be good animal citizens and help some folks out from church who needed to find a home for their cat. (i say we, but since most of you know i'm not a cat person, i will rephrase and say ken.) ken thought echo needed a companion so she's not lonely when we're not home. (not like it's all the time.) so ming, the siamese cat, came to live with us for a trial run last night. after almost a whole night of not sleeping because echo was barking and crying at it, and a half day of the same thing plus a few good swats that ming laid on echo, we've decided it's not going to work out. plus, i'm not really a cat person, to put it mildly. sorry to all the cat lovers out there! here's ming before she pounced on echo...

kriti bowling and beaches

dawn celebrating a strikedawn sneaking in behind uscory getting bowling tips from walker
ken in action

this weekend the LT j.g. association (consisting of only cory and john) put together a bowling nite at mega bowl. i wasn't sure what a kriti bowling experience would be like, but it was quite fun and the place was really nice. the last hour turned into "cosmic-style/glow-in-the-dark" bowling which was really cool. i only bowled a 66 the first game (not sure what happened), but finished up my 4th game in second place at 141. cory won every game except the first one he tied with ken. i have a new mission...to find a sport cory is NOT good at and beat him at it. not sure it's possible....he seems to be one of those all-around athletes who tries something and immediately reaches proficiency.

kriti bank story... (you will love this!)
so dawn went to the bank to make her rent deposit to her landlord's bank account. the teller told her it was now 1.50 eu to make a deposit. (umm...what? paying to make a deposit??) so she gave them a 50 eu bill and the bank teller said, "no, no change." what? dawn stepped back and said to him, "this is a bank, right?" he said "yes, but have no change. kiosk next door." (a kiosk is a quick-pick store where you can buy drinks, lotto tickets, newspapers, etc.) dawn had a hard time believing a bank could not make change, but she followed the teller's instruction and got change at the kiosk. then she returned with the exact 1.50 eu needed to make a deposit. what can i say...this is one of those "endoxy" moments, or what i affectionately refer to as a 'kristism'.

finally, we went back to falasarna beach (where we took colleen in april and received microdermabrasions from the blowing sand.) it was about the same...still got free microdermabrasions although they weren't as intense so we didn't have to retreat to the rocks. we set up washers on the beach and the greeks were fascinated by this game. we had a few spectators stop by who seemed like they wanted to learn how to play. or maybe they were just saying "crazy americans" to themselves?? after we left the beach joe led us to a fantastic sicilian restaurant where we enjoyed some great pasta dishes. we'll definitely go back!! later that night we went to alan's house for a fish fry. he had a great spread with homemade sushi, fried fish, homemade jalapeno poppers and fish chowder. so much food we all got doggy bags and ken and i had the yummy leftovers after church today. a great weekend in crete!! :)

ken and joe were the first to brave the super-cold western crete water at falasarna beach
dawn thought kicking sand on kyle would slow he and don down in the washers tourney but they dominated everyone all day!
